How it works
From idea to finished pattern in five minutes
You make the choices. KnitLab does the maths: stitch counts, increases, decreases and yarn amounts for every size.
-
1
Choose a garment
A circular-yoke or raglan jumper, a cardigan with button bands, mittens or a hat.
-
2
Sizes and fit
Adult XS–XXL or children 2–12 years. Close-fitting, classic or oversized – and the length you want.
-
3
Yarn and tension
Pick a well-known yarn or add your own, with the tension from your swatch.
-
4
Colourwork and colours
Add a colourwork band to the yoke, the mittens or the hat – or draw your own.
The result: a pattern you can knit from
The numbers for your size are highlighted throughout the pattern. Here is an excerpt for the cardigan in size M:
Body. Cast on 225 stitches on a 3.5 mm circular needle and join to work in the round. 5 of these stitches are steek stitches at centre front.
Sleeves. Increase 1 stitch on each side of the marker every 8th round, 13 times in total = 72 stitches.
Buttonholes. Knit 3 stitches, *cast off 2 stitches, knit 20 stitches*, repeat 6 times in total … You now have 7 buttonholes.

FAQ
Questions and answers
Is KnitLab available in English?
Not yet. The app and the patterns are in Norwegian for now, and the English version is on its way – with British knitting terms and measurements in centimetres. Join the waitlist and we'll let you know as soon as it's ready.
Do I need to know how to design knitwear?
No. You choose the garment, size and yarn, and KnitLab writes the pattern. If you can knit from an ordinary pattern, you can knit from one made with KnitLab.
Which yarn can I use?
Any yarn you like. There are quick picks for popular Norwegian yarns, but you can add your own with the metres and grams per ball and the tension from your swatch.
Are the numbers right?
Stitch counts are worked out from the garment's measurements and your tension, and rounded so that pattern repeats and decreases fit. A pattern can never be more accurate than your tension swatch, so always knit one. The yarn amount is an estimate with a 10% margin. The calculations have been adjusted against many published patterns, but the patterns you create have not been test knitted. Major patterns are test knitted before they are published, and it's a good idea to do the same if you want to share or sell your pattern.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. KnitLab is made for phones first, but works just as well on a computer or tablet. If you sign in, you have your designs on all your devices. Add KnitLab to your home screen and it opens like an app: on iPhone, use the Share button in Safari and ‘Add to Home Screen’; on Android, use the menu in Chrome.
Can I cancel Pro?
Yes, at any time from the menu in the app. There's no commitment, and you keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for. For the first 14 days you also have a right of withdrawal: you get your money back, minus the days you've had Pro. Read more in the terms.
